First-hand account of carpet production in Afghanistan 2001-05-27 For those wishing to learn about Afghan carpets this book specialises in them. Having recently launched myself into a binge of reading books on carpets, with the intention of going into the carpet business, I have learned that, in the many books which attempt to describe kinds of oriental carpet, each regional section tends to be unsatisfyingly brief. This book by Parsons is an excellent rigorous treatment of all carpets that might be said to be Afghan. He includes Turkomen products that are associated with Afghanistan, and also the recent emergence of carpets produced by Afghan refugees in a number of countries. He has drawn directly from his own extensive travels in that land, and indeed the book is also instructive to anyone with armshair travel interests. As the author points out, the country is now closed. Parsons gives us an account of the world there up to his last visit in 1989. He has included many black and white photographs of various places in Afghanistan, although the quality leaves something to be desired, many of them resemble the work of an Instamatic. The author is clearly an expert on Afghan rugs. He lists each kind of rug with reference to the precise locality and there are examples offered in abundance in full-colour plates -- the quality here being second to none! This is the product of an expert who has bought his products from source, and it the sense of a first-hand account that makes the book so refreshing.
